Post-Thrombotic Syndrome
If you’ve experienced deep venous thrombosis, or the development of a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg or pelvis, the valves in these veins may become inflamed and chronically damaged.
This can reduce circulation in the affected leg, leading to post-thrombotic syndrome. Symptoms include pain, swelling, changes in skin color and texture, and, in severe cases, the development of skin ulcers. Topical wound care and antibiotics may be used to address the ulcers; if they take longer than six months to heal, surgery may be required.
Post-thrombotic syndrome typically occurs within two to five years of venous thrombosis. In cases where the thrombosis has gone unnoticed, it’s possible to be diagnosed with post-thrombotic syndrome first.
