Endovenous laser ablation
Endovenous laser ablation is a minimal invasive alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein. It’s used to treat varicose veins and post-thrombotic syndrome.
A small laser fiber is inserted into the damaged vein, usually through a needle in the skin. Pulses of laser light delivered inside the vein cause it to collapse and seal shut.
The procedure is done in-office, under local anesthesia. You leave with a bandage or compression stocking on the treated leg right after the procedure and should limit vigorous activity as your physician recommends. You also take anti-inflammatory medication for several days after the procedure. Endovenous laser ablation is FDA-approved for treating the greater and lesser saphenous vein and has shown to be as effective as surgical stripping.
