Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for varicose and spider veins at an early stage to prevent further complications. A tiny needle is used to inject a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. The surface veins are no longer visible.
You may need one to several sclerotherapy sessions for any vein region, with one to several injections per session. Afterward, you generally can resume normal activities. You may need to wear prescribed support stocking and/or bandages for several days to assist in resolution of the veins and might need to avoid sun exposure.
The procedure, performed in the doctor's office, typically causes only minimal discomfort. Bruising and pigmentation may occur. Bruising typically disappears within 1-2 weeks. Although pigmentation almost always fades, it can last for several months. Scarring and other complications are rare.
