The heart pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients to all the parts of the body through the arteries. Then, after the oxygen is delivered, veins carry the blood back to the heart.

The motion of your leg muscles helps move the blood back to the heart from the lower body.  These lower-body veins have one-way valves that prevent the blood from flowing backwards as it moves up the legs. But when the one-way valves become weak, blood leaks back into the vein and collects there. Over time, the pooled blood enlarges the vein, which is then a "varicose" vein. They are often described as looking like 'rope' under the skin, and may also be discolored to a lesser or greater extent.
